One of the social issues we discussed at length is the issue of Poverty. There are many people around the world, and in our own communities, who do not have their basic needs met. Some families do not have enough food to eat, or adequate housing to live in, or health care. This definitely makes us think, “that’s not fair!” We discussed the many reasons why poverty exists in our world, and more importantly, ways that we can help.
This summer I will be doing a small part to help in the fight against Poverty, by working with Habitat for Humanity. I will be traveling to Malaysia to help build a house for a family in need. Habitat for Humanity’s motto is “hand up, not hand out.” Together, with a team of 12 Canadians, I will get the chance to work side by side with the family we will be helping to live in affordable, safe, and clean housing.
You can help out in the fight against poverty as well. If you would like to help me raise funds for Habitat for Humanity, you can visit my giving page at Canada Helps.Org: http://www.canadahelps.org/GivingPages/GivingPage.aspx?gpID=26264
You can also read up about all the other wonderful work that Habitat is doing around other parts of the world by visiting their website: http://www.habitat.ca
I know that everyone will be enjoying their summer vacation, but if you get a chance, check back on this blog sometime in August when I hope to have pictures of my Malaysia mission. Let's all hope that one day every human being in the world will enjoy the security of safe, affordable housing, and enough food to stay healthy!

P.S. While I do always appreciate occasional teacher gifts at the end of the year by students, a donation to Habitat for Humanity would be a really worthwhile and charitable alternative and it would be great knowing that families in need are being supported in some way.
