Current Unit of Study: First Nations and Early Explorers in Canada
Our Class Note About: The VikingsThe Vikings were sailors from Norway in Northern Europe. They came to North America about 1000 years ago (in 986). Bjarni was the first Viking to visit North America. Before he came to North America, he got lost on his way to Greenland because of the fog. Leif Ericsson was the second Viking to arrive in North America. Leif and his crew built small houses and repaired boats and cut trees to be shipped back to Greenland and to make their homes.
The Vikings wanted to stay because this new land had so many resources that Greenland didn't have. They found grapes for wine, trees, and salmon bigger than they had ever seen! The first Viking to be born in North America was a boy called Snorre. The Vikings called the Aboriginal people Skraelings. The Vikings left because they went to battle with the Skraelings over the fact that the Aboriginal people did not like them setting up camp on their land. Many people died from each group. The Vikings were afraid and left. |
