What Are Social Issues?
Social Issues are those things that make us stop and think "that's just not fair." These issues are not fair because they go against the rights that we all have as human beings. When people are treated unfairly, their human rights are violated. Some social issues that we will be discussing in class are:
Racism
Gender Inequality
Poverty (Homelessness and Hunger)
Bullying
Environmental Issues
Child Labour
Physical and Mental Disabilities

What Are Book Clubs?
Book Clubs are an excellent way to explore a lot of different books, all connected by a central theme, while sharing your thoughts with other people who are reading the same book. Book Clubs...
These are the books we are reading as part of our book clubs unit on Social Issues. Small groups of students will choose one of these books to read. Some groups will read many of the books, while other groups may only read a few. Each group reads at their own pace.

Speeches
Students in the Junior Grades will write and present a speech on a topic of their choice. Every student will present to the class during the week of June 10-June 14. As a class, we will vote on 2 students to represent our class and present their speech to the rest of the Junior Division.
Learning Goal: Students will present their thoughts on a topic of their choice. They will use the writing process to gather their ideas, research information, organize their writing and present their speech orally. The purpose of their speech will be to persuade, inspire, entertain, inform (or a combination of some of these things). |
