Curriculum Corner
Here is an overview of what we are currently studying in each of our curriculum areas. This page will be updated as new units begin. For a more in-depth look at some of the work we've done in each area, click on each subject title.
Religion & Family Life
During the last 6 weeks of school, we will be working through the Family Life Unit: Created Sexual, Male and Female. Please see the Religion/Family Life page for a family letter outlining topics to be discussed.
We will also continue to spend time in prayer through student-led liturgies. Please see our monthly calendar for May and June for a breakdown of topics and dates for each group. |
Language (Reading, writing, oral, Media)
Our last book club focus for the year will be on Social Issues. In class, we will discuss and explore a variety of social issues, such as poverty, bullying, health, education, equality and racism. We will read a variety of children's literature which explore these issues and make us stop and think about the world in which we live. We will stop and think about whether or not something is fair and why it makes us feel like that.
Our writing focus is on Speeches. Speeches are meant to inform, entertain, inspire or persuade. They can also do a combination of all of these things. Speeches can be serious, or they can be entertaining. We will spend a significant amount of time on the speech writing process. Students will then be given an opportunity to present their speech to the class, and some students will be chosen to present their speeches to the rest of the Junior Division. |
Mathematics
Our final unit in Mathematics will be on Probability. We will explore the likely hood of a variety of events. Students will describe that probability using words, percent and fractions. We will conduct a variety of experiments in class to test out the probability of a variety of events.

Science or Social Studies
We are almost finished our unit about Canada's Links to the World. We will discuss how Canada helps developing countries through trade, world aid and peacekeeping.
|
Visual Arts
Our exploration of colour continues. So far, we have looked at the three sets of colour: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. The students will be given a chance to mix primary and secondary colours to create the tertiary colours. They will also explore different colour relationships, such as complimentary, contrasting, warm and cool colours. We will take a look at how colour can bring emotion into art works.

Health & Phys. Ed
In Phys. Ed we have started a unit on Dance. Miss Colangelo will be teaching the students about a variety of different dance styles, while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. To culminate our unit, the students will prepare and perform a dance routine at Dance Fest.
Our Health program will continue where the V.I.P. program has left off: we will be exploring the effects of substances and what substance abuse is. |
Drama / V.I.P. / other
Our next V.I.P. session will be about the law and particularly how it affects the youth. Students will get a chance to put on a mock trial to see how the law is played out in court here in Canada.
We will begin to look at a variety of drama techniques and forms such as role playing and tableaux. Students will learn how gestures, position, frame, facial expression and movement can help to bring meaning to a dramatic performance. Students will demonstrate their knowledge in Religion through the use of these drama techniques. |
